Entry of choice: My feelings after reading this book
I had to read this book because when I went to the library I couldn't find the book "Animal farm" which I heard it was easy. When I started this book I thought it will be really hard. But I realized that there is also a movie for this book "The Lord of the Flies." So I wanted to see the movie first but I couldn't find one. So I determined to read the book fast as I could and go read another book. However, when I started to read the introductory part of the book it was very interesting that I went over the book two times. I liked the author expressing these thoughts. And when I finished this book I felt very proud of myself, because I never thought I will finish book like this. I also find out the main character Ralph has some introspective part which match with me. And also, this book "Lord of the Flies" made me think about the previous book I read, which is "Fahrenheit 451" to tell the similarities both books are very tragic, sad, and harsh. But significant part is that both of the books made think about my surroundings and how our society is reacting to this kind of problem. Therefore, this book is a book I recommend you to read if you haven't read yet. If you read this book and think that it seems a good book you can read the "Fahrenheit 451" which is the similar book.

#7 LORD OF THE FLIES
Are there any settings in this novel which you have found to be beautiful? or disturbing? or memorable? Describe these settings and comment on why they were meaningful to you?
In this book the most general setting is inhabitant island. And the story goes on in this island. There were lots of setting very memorable and some disturbing or beautiful. But most of the settings were very tragic and sad from the beginning to the end. When all boys were cast away on the desert island I thought about Robinsoncrusoe and felt sorry for them. When all the boys add their power to hunt, it wasn't quite beautiful because they didn't wanted to do it, but little hopeful because they at least tried together. And when first kid disappeared they didn't care about him at all. However, when Ralph and Jack had to split and fight each other it was really disturbing. Moreover, the time when Simon Piggy died it made me sort of sick of the savage instinct they are having. And I didn't like the the authors expression hunting and fighting. In my opinion, there are all ways at least one setting beautiful or hopeful because without these combined settings the book can't be made. For example, in the book " A Series of Unfortunate Events" there are some setting make us happy. These kind of settings were meaningful to me even though it was tragic and sad, because it made me imagine how human beings change and can be violent in dangerous situation. But patient people like Ralph or Simon act like an adult. And from this book I learned that we always have to fight with our self with discretion.

When I went through this book there was several quotes came to my mind but the most attractive quote was "What I mean is . . . Maybe it’s only us . . .” This is the word from chapter 4 that Simon says. When I first read, it seemed Simon is telling the kids left in this island are only themselves. Simon is one of my favorite character because he is the truthful man and the kindest boy. This quote seems very careful. When Jack and his companions go to hunt the pig they find a dead parachute from the airplane, but they misunderstood this was a beast. So every kids in the island become scary and frightened. Simon says we might saw ourselves and everybody laughs at him because they thought it didn't make sense at all. However, Ralph, Piggy, and Simon doesn't find out and Simon finally gets murdered by one kid. Every time I read the book and find out the quote it comes to my mind I finally realized that every quote I chose have some relationship with me. Therefore, This quote is significant to me because I had some similar case with Simon. Sometimes when I say what I think is the truth they just ignore my opinion and do whatever it is by their selves. And this shows that Simon tries to be truthful and faithful rather than trying to rely on the savage instinct. And sometimes it may not be as helpful as you think. So always try your best!

I think the mood of this novel is very dark, tragic, depressing, violent, sad, and harsh. But in some perspective it can be thrilling, exciting, and adventurous. When I began to read the book it seemed there is no hope for the boys who are left in the island. However, trying to survive in this situation made them too violent. There was always a depressing or sad moment. For example, when Jack and Ralph had to fight it seemed very violent and when Piggy died the instinct of children looked pretty much obvious. They had to choose a leader which made them a big conflict. In contrast, if you think in a positive way it may be different. When all the children were left in the island you may think this story will be adventurous. And when Piggy died you can think the story is getting thrilling and cause tension. I think this story saddens me pretty much because it shows savage instinct or to be the best they do everything. And it made me think of elections in Korea and government fighting each other. And thought about how human beings can be so aggressive like this. Environmental things of nature can change our perception to look objects. The definition for climax in internet says "most exciting or important moment" (from naver.com) however, in my own words climax means to be the most highest point of plot which someone seems to make a decision. So in my opinion, I think the climax of novel is the death of Piggy, when Ralph decides to runaway in the forest. In the evening time, Jack and his companions come to invade Ralph and his accompanies. In this situation Jack shows savage instinct. However they go back with Piggy's glasses. So Ralph and Piggy go to Jack's part of the land to get Piggy's glasses back. But they do not find glasses and instead they get attacked by them. Ralph and Jack fights that they lost their temper. When Ralph sees Piggys death because of the rocks attacked by Roger, he calm his anger and run away through the forest. And he doesn't know where he's going Ralph is just finding out to get far from Jack. Also Simons death made me sad as I did for Piggy. And as I followed along about this climax or the story I thought about the political party fighting against each other. They lose control of thir minds. I think the main characters in this novel are Ralph and Jack. And Piggy, Simon, Roger are secondary character. Ralph is the protagonist elected from the boys in the island. Jack is the antagonist of Ralph, who desire the most power and become the leader of hunter and becomes the leader of boys by force, Piggy is a boy with glasses and lieutenant of Ralph. Simon is a shy boy who is very intellectual and thinks in a positive way. And Roger, who is the lieutenant of Jack kills Piggy. Of this all character I like Ralph the most and Simon. I like Ralph the most because he tries to be patient from Jack and always make a decision, which is the leader's job. Also he attempts to be rescued by using the fire. And Simon is the character I like second. I think he is the only good personality boy who tries to understand everybody and be nice to the younger boys and helpful to Ralph by giving some advices. Jack and Roger are the boys having savage instinct that cannot survive in the society. Always these kinds of people who only think about themselves might be successful one time, but after they always fail because of their instinct. However, these characters are all special because they are young boys who act like an adult trying to survive in this island. If I was in that situation I might die because I'm not brave enough like Ralph or Jack. And the most potential candidates of Korea are Geunhye Park and Meungbak Lee who all came from same party(group), which is Han Nara. They are fighting each other to be elected. And this can be related to "Lord of the Flies" Jack and Ralph arguing to be the representatives. Ralph and Piggy shows the civilized ages opposed to Jack and his followers who symbolizes savagery and a forceful power. They are the antagonist of Ralph. However, in this novel it shed the light to be fixed and show the way to solve this problem to the right way. These conflicts can be solved by opening their minds like Simon or Ralph. One quote from Internet says"is an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature" in one site. And I think it also can mean living in society is related to our moral integrity of individual members personality, which in this novel "Lord of the Flies" says one's evilness and savage instinct can cause other's and the society to be changed and subsistence instinct. Jack is the example of this theme. He betrays his friend Ralph and tries to rule all the boys by himself. And after I read this I thought Jack and the government are related closely. They both are crazy about the power and authority. And one that I'm going to tell isn't actually a theme, but in my opinion, we all should be patient and try for the teamwork. In my experience, when I did teamwork it sometimes made me help better. Because in some part I might be good insufficient, which other partner may be good at or weak at. This theme is important to teenagers, because teenagers are the ages preparing for university which means we are going to go out to society. Entry of choice: My feelings after reading this book
Fahrenheit 451 will be one of my most memorable books which I have read because it makes me think deeply. In my opinion, this book is very tragic book which refers to a hard life. When I started this book I couldn't understand what they are talking about. But after approximately 14pages I started to understand what's going on this book. I almost gave up reading this book when I read 10pages. However I heard it from Mrs. Lavender and friends that it's going to be easier as the story go on. So I continuously read this book slowly thinking about the summary and it worked for me a little and finished the book. It made me sad that government is ruling the society and banning books and house. However, when I finished this book I automatically thought about countries like North America, Russia and Germany who had dictatorship and rule over their power but not the citizen. And as I went on I had some question I couldn't understand questions like " if there's a fireman, did firefighters disappear?"
"why did Clarisse disappear?" and I automatically imagined after this book what if our country be like that in few years? When I read this kind of book I automatically imagine and that's what everyone does. But if books are gone we can't imagine and nobody will be able to invent things or do something about technology if there are no books. Moreover, all the histories and memory of ancient people will be hidden from the society.

But people like Montag, Faber, Clarisse go against this law which means there are some people who are thinking and have knowledge. In addition, I thought about what if I was in that kind of situation where I cannot read books. I think there are no beautiful settings in this novel, but the setting where Montag and Clarisse walk together the street, yard have little hope. All settings were very tragic like burning books, houses, fighting each other, and war. There are some disturbing settings and some memorable settings. Disturbing setting was when his companion burns his house and in general the community like this. Also the memorable setting was in their town after the war, when Montag and his accompanies try to change the system and build buildings. All these settings were very tragic but still meaningful to me, because it still gives hope that in any situation that's terribly tragic you still can try to go against it and it also made me think about the most memorable setting and the terrible place I have went ever in my life. And thought about settings where I have been similar to this situation such as military. After I have read this book I kind of thought that I'm living in a happy place where I can learn from books, research the history, and discuss some information together as we go on.

My favorite passage from this book was from page 165, which is the last page of the book “And on either side of the river was there a tree of life, which bore twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of nations.” this passage is meaningful because this quote shows how the society is destroyed and hope is almost gone, also governments desire to have permanent power over this society or community, and we do not know what governments will do, they might just get rid of people memory. But if this happens to be bigger maybe government will start killing people. So Montag and Granger, who has changed the mind entirely to the good side makes a decision and wants to tell that the society can be rebuilt by people who thinks about themselves and have knowledge they can go against the government, and to give hope to others like Clarisse did to him. This quote is the last statement in the book, which is very important and have lots of meaning and moral we can learn. This passage was hard to understand when I first read it, because it used a figure of speech, but when I finally understood what the meaning shows it was a thoughtful quote that makes me think deeply. I'm expecting there are more books like this, which give us a moral that makes us think carefully and contains lots of mood.

This book is very thrilling because Montag and his companions go against the law and tries to change thing. In my opinion, it saddens every reader who read, because there are lots of people who read books in their leisure time to gain some knowledge and some enjoyment. However, in this novel it shows darkness by people who are just sleeping and watching TV but not looking books. They are just being like machines. Doing same thing, repeating and repeating like robots. It's too awful law to burn books and house down. What is the climax of this novel? what happens? How the events of this novel make you feel?
In my opinion, the climax of this novel is when Montag kills Beatty with framer at the point Beatty was listening to the radio and when the fireman try to burn his house because of her wife's betray. Montag never knew his wife has called Beatty, so he finally decides to go out of the country or city and when Beatty doesn't let him go he finally kills Beatty. He had to kill Beatty because Guy Montag had been reading books and hiding them secretly. So I think this scene is the climax which is mostly flourished. And as I went through the climax part it made me so sad that Montag had to make a decision to kill a person. In addition, it made me think about a book called "The Pearl" which I read with Ms. Johnson when I was in ESL class. The main character in this book called Kino makes a decision to kill a person too. As you can see in this case or novel, the governments are trying to erase peoples memory and knowledge because they want their authority and power forever. However, I really wanted the book the end in happy ending such as reaching Montags goal. But it didn't seem like he achieved his goal. This event makes me feel so depressed, sad, and lament. It is too unimaginable that we can't get out of the city without permission. And it shows how government is control of power. We shouldn't let our society be like this when this kind of system occur.
In my opinion, the climax of this novel is when Montag kills Beatty with framer at the point Beatty was listening to the radio and when the fireman try to burn his house because of her wife's betray. Montag never knew his wife has called Beatty, so he finally decides to go out of the country or city and when Beatty doesn't let him go he finally kills Beatty. He had to kill Beatty because Guy Montag had been reading books and hiding them secretly. So I think this scene is the climax which is mostly flourished. And as I went through the climax part it made me so sad that Montag had to make a decision to kill a person. In addition, it made me think about a book called "The Pearl" which I read with Ms. Johnson when I was in ESL class. The main character in this book called Kino makes a decision to kill a person too. Who are the main characters in the novel? do you like them? why or why not? what is special about them? what do they reveal about the universal human experience?
The main characters for this novel are Montag, Clarisse, Mildred, Faber, and Beatty. And there are some minor character who just come out once or twice. Montag is the most main character who is a fireman.(burn things rather than stopping.) Clarisse is a young girl who think about herself and have some knowledge. Mildred is Montags wife who dies in the end because of sleeping peels and other stuff. Beatty is the boss of this fireman system. Faber and Grager are people who have same opinion with Montag. Montag doesn't think anything is wrong until he meet Clarisse. The character who I like the most is Montag, becuase Montag finally realizes what he has done and think about himself. Also he tries to escape from the city or country where there are kind of fireman who burns things. Clarisse is aslo one of my favorite character too because she helps Montag to realize what he has done and she is a person who has knowledge and different from other people. And in the beginning of the story she disappears and Montag thinks she is dead by car accident because her wfie heard a rumor.

I think there are some current situations that relate to this novel. First, many people in the world including children and adults are getting lazy and do not care about how the world is going on. They are spending there time doing Internet, watching TV, and etc. But in this novel Montag shadows this problem and he kind of resolves the problem. At first he was afraid to change stuff but he made his mind certain. Montag began to read and think of himself, but in the middle of story Beatty finds out Montag hiding books. Second, some parents are giving up there child because they are born handicap or have some kind of disease. But that's a bad thing to do for your children. They still are born because they are selected.We never know how they will become. You have to have grateful mind for yourself and others. And the novel shadow this problem by people who are burning the books and getting rid of knowledge. But it shows the way to get fixed too. Montag realizes that they should not keep burning houses or books. What is the major theme of this novel? why is this theme important to a teenager living in 2007?
It was hard to find out the theme for this book because everything was so tragic. However, I think the theme for this book is that first, don't follow others and think of your own thought and try to express as Montag did in the end of the story. Second, knowledge can make people confused and angry about life but knowledge is the basic term to live a life effectively and well. Clarisse made this happen in this book. Third, it's your choice to change your mind and make a decision like Montag. Author, Ray Bradbury, wants to say that books are essential to people, but they do not notice this current situation. And as I read this book it made me think about how I followed others and didn't notice the importance of knowledge. As you can see in these days many peoples do not read books and be addicted to computer games or video games. If we think of book, many people will think it's boring and doesn't help at all. We have to change this mind and find what kind of book you are interested in. So as I thought, most of the teenagers who read this book will remind of how life is changing.
